The historic Heart Theatre, announces an exciting community event this summer to celebrate the theatre’s legacy. On Thursday, August 8, 2024, the Effingham County Cultural Center and Museum, located at 120 W. Jefferson, will be the site of an outdoor movie night under the stars. Jefferson and Washington Avenues will be closed starting at 6:30pm, with the classic 1989 film “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” scheduled to begin at 8:30pm.
“We are thrilled to bring a touch of nostalgia back to Effingham with this outdoor movie event,” said Amy Van Bergen who is serves on the board of directors for the historic landmark. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for families to come together and enjoy a beloved film in a historic setting.”
The public is invited to bring their own blankets, chairs, and snacks. Per city and county guidelines, no alcohol will be permitted at the event. Attendees can also look forward to delicious offerings from onsite food vendors, including Toppins Soft Serve Ice Cream and Macklin Meadow Kettle Corn.
Van Bergen and a dedicated team of volunteers worked closely with county and city officials to bring this family-friendly event to fruition. The project received overwhelming support during recent meetings, underscoring the community’s enthusiasm for preserving the Heart Theatre’s cultural heritage.
Since acquiring the Heart Theatre in 2022, Van Bergen has diligently pursued initiatives to revitalize the historic venue, including feasibility studies and securing its listing on the National Register of Historic Places. Renovation efforts are forthcoming, with fundraising initiatives planned to ensure the theatre’s sustainable future.
“This project is a testament to our community’s resilience and commitment to preserving our cultural landmarks,” noted Van Bergen. “We aim not only to restore the Heart Theatre but also to establish an endowment that will safeguard its legacy for generations to come.”
