My First Movie

Updated: Jul 31, 2022

Back in the late 1960s I saw my first movie at The Heart. It was “Snow White”…and I remember being terrified of the wicked queen/witch.

I also remember the glass-lit steps (that seemed so big for my five-year-old feet) as I went up them to get to the ladies room.

From the moment I entered the glass doors with those Art Deco handles, every bit of that experience was eye opening and fantastical.

The Heart holds a special place in my heart. In fact, when I was visiting Effingham in 2019 I asked everyone I met about their memories of The Heart. And everyone had a story for me—the cashier at Martin’s IGA told me about seeing “Jaws” there, a kindergarten teacher shared her senior prom photo taken atop the marquis and the grandmother who took her grandson to see Aladdin in the 90s multiple times.

What was your first movie at The Heart?
